Commentary

Commentary

This verse reveals the mechanism of cosmic creation. Krishna does not personally mold each being like a potter shaping clay. Instead, He enters His own material nature (prakriti) through His glance, and from that empowered nature, all beings spring forth — automatically, repeatedly, and in perfect accordance with their past karma.

Prakritim Svaam — His Own Nature

The phrase prakritim svaam — “My own material nature” — establishes that material nature is not independent. It belongs to Krishna. It acts under His authority, like a government department acting under the direction of the head of state. The Supreme Lord is the ultimate cause, but nature is the immediate instrument.

In the Bhagavad Gita itself, Krishna says: “I am the seed-giving father of all living beings.” Just as a father places the seed within the mother’s womb, the Lord places the living entities within the womb of material nature by His glance. Material nature then brings forth the diverse species according to each soul’s accumulated desires and karma.

Punah Punah — Again and Again

Creation is not a one-time event. The words punah punah — again and again — emphasize the cyclical nature of this process. Every cosmic cycle brings the same process: beings emerge, live, dissolve, and emerge again. This repetition is not arbitrary — it serves the purpose of giving each soul the opportunity to fulfill its desires and, ultimately, to turn toward the Divine.

Avasham — Helpless Under Material Nature

The word avasham is sobering. The beings created are helpless — subject to the control of material nature. They do not choose their birth, their body, or their initial circumstances. These are determined by their prior karma. Only through spiritual awakening can a soul transcend this helpless condition and attain freedom. This is why Krishna teaches — to offer the way out.
